Billy Joe Smith
October 25, 1924 - October 25, 2011

Billy Joe Smith of Waco passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at a local hospital after a brief illness. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 29, at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Mesa officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 28, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey.

Joe was born in Waco, TX, the fifth son of Frank Hill and Willie E. Howard Smith and lived in Waco all of his life. He served in the US Navy during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. He married Mary Beth Williams in June, 1949, and they were married for 58 years. He worked for the Veterans Administration for a brief time before joining his father and brothers in the family business – Frank Smith & Sons. He retired when the business sold in 1977. Joe was an avid Baylor Bear fan and a member of Austin Avenue Methodist Church in Waco.

Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife; brothers, Claude L. Smith, Barrett Smith and Morris M. Smith; nephew, Morris M. Smith Jr.; and niece, Suzanne Newman.

Survivors include brother, Howard P. Smith and wife, Dorothy; step-son, Charles Dickens and wife, Barbara; brother-in-law, Joe Bumpus; grandchildren, Mike & Elisha Dickens, Chip and Rebecca Dickens and Chrissy and John Greeling; nieces and nephews, Leslie Smith, Dale and Jack Dunn, Pat and Judy Smith, Diana Smith, Gwenette and Jim Wetzel, David and Debi Smith, Randy and Wendy Smith. Joe is also survived by seven great grandchildren, great nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Honorary pallbearers are J.D. Hudson Jr., Ed Starr, John Hawes, Bob Williams, Scott Felton, Carson Hoge, Rev. Donald Scott, Dr. Ross Shipp and Stanley Williams.

The family would like to thank Lynn Klatt for her love and support of Joe through the years and also the doctors and nurses of Pod B at Providence ICU for the kindness shown to Joe and our family during this time.
